Legal and Consumer Rights

More than five million older adults suffer losses from financial fraud every year. Criminals tend to target seniors who have accumulated savings. Stay on guard. Don’t become a victim of fraud.

Seniors also need to be careful when completing legal or financial transactions. The local bar association can help you to find an attorney in your area that specializes in the field of law that you need. Elder-law attorneys focus on issues of particular interest to older adults.

If you need legal help but cannot afford a lawyer, legal services or legal aid organizations may be able to help you. These organizations provide free or low-cost legal work to people with low incomes.

The Florida Senior Legal Helpline offers free telephone advice to state residents age 60 and older. This helpline is funded by grants from the Federal Administration on Aging and the Florida Department of Elder Affairs. Call (toll-free) 1-888-894-7873, Monday through Friday, from 9 AM until 2 PM.
