Do you want to join a winning team? Do you like to help others resolve problems? Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity that enables you to make a real difference in the lives of elders in you community?

If you answered, “yes” to all of these questions, we may have the perfect volunteer position for you!

SHINE already has over 400 volunteers who have knowledge and experience from all walks of life. But, there can never be enough devoted individuals helping elders make informed decisions about their health coverage. SHINE continuously accepts applications for volunteers to provide services to Medicare consumers, their families, and caregivers.

What do SHINE volunteers do?

SHINE volunteers:

  • Provide information, counseling and assistance;
  • Make educational presentations to community groups;
  • Distribute materials at health fairs, senior fairs & outreach events; and,
  • Assist with general program support.

Volunteer Requirements

Requirements to become a SHINE volunteer include an interest in working with the senior population; competent computer skills; the ability to use the Internet; as well as successful completion of required training.

Training is provided to individuals who successfully complete an application. Please contact the SHINE Liaison for an application or for more information. Additionally, active volunteers are asked to commit just four hours a week, attend update meetings and refresher training.

Volunteering can be a significant commitment for some individuals. However, the rewards for volunteering with SHINE are plentiful. Since the program’s inception in 1993, SHINE volunteers have assisted nearly a million elders and their caregivers. In addition to saving elders millions of dollars, they have brought peace of mind to people who have had difficulty understanding their health insurance options.

To volunteer in Brevard, Orange, Osceola or Seminole counties, contact Donna Bradford, SHINE Liaison, at (407) 514-1823.
